Obituary for Vangel Michael

Vangel L. Michael, age 84, of Fairfield, CT, passed away on March 10, 2018 at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of Diana Chala Michael for 57 years. Vangel was born in Floqi, Albania and came to the United States at the age of four. He resided in Southbridge, MA until his enlistment in the U.S. Army, where he served as a medic during the Korean Conflict from 1953 – 1955. He then moved to Bridgeport, CT with his family and attended the University of Bridgeport, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1960. Vangel also attended the Florida State University School of Social Work from 1960 – 1961 and the University of Connecticut School of Social Work, where he received a Master of Social Work Degree in 1963. After working as a Case Supervisor for the State Welfare Department, he went on to work for the Fairfield Public School System as a High School Social Worker from 1966 until his retirement in 1993.
Vangel was a devoted member of St. George Albanian Orthodox Church in Trumbull, CT, where he served as a Cantor, Tonsured Reader, and Choir Member for many years, as well as an active member on Parish Councils, Church Building Committee and the Executive Board of the Mary James Fund, which assists women of Albanian and Greek descent. He was awarded a Knight of St. George from the Albanian Orthodox Archdiocese in America for his decades of prayerful service and devotion to the church. In addition to his love of the church and his family, Van enjoyed spending time playing golf and cards with his close friends and following the sports played by his grandchildren and favorite teams.
He was pre-deceased by his parents, Reverend Lambi Michael and Dhoksia Stoia Michael, and his siblings; Alexandra Christo of Southbridge, MA, Peter Michael of Fairfield, CT, Theodore Michael of Southport, CT, Georgia Naum of Fairfield, CT and Pandora Kerma of Fairfield, CT. In addition to his wife Diana, he is survived by his loving children; Laura Coughlin and her husband Tim of Trumbull, CT, Jonathan Michael, and his wife Sanja of Bath, ME and his treasured grandchildren Kelly Coughlin, TJ Coughlin and Alexandra Michael. Survivors also include his sister-in-law Zoe Michael of Fairfield, CT, brother-in-law Boro Kerma and his wife Liliana of Tirane, Albania and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at St. George Albanian Orthodox Church, 5490 Main Street, Trumbull, CT 06611 with Archpriest Dennis Rhodes officiating. Interment will be at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield, CT. Calling hours will take place from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, March 14 at Commerce Hill Funeral Home, 4798 Main Street, Bridgeport CT, with the Trisagion Service taking place at 7:30 pm.
